The home side had the better of the game from the start, but only poor finishing from Sebastien Haller, who had scored in each of his last three games, prevented them from leading. However the Frenchman did play a crucial role in the opening goal on 29 minutes, as his flick sent Bart Ramselaar through on goal and the midfielder’s shot just beat Padt and ended in the net.
Groningen handed Hedwiges Maduro a debut in the second half, but the midfielder could not inspire his side to a comeback as Utrecht continued to dominate. Yassin Ayoub sent a free kick against the post, before Timo Letschert finally made the points safe in injury time, racing onto another clever flick by Haller and smashing the ball past Padt.
Utrecht climb above Groningen in the table after the win, and currently sit 10th. Groningen drop to 12th.
