Utrecht gained a much needed win after seeing off Heerenveen 2-0 on Sunday to move them up the table.

mulenga cThe visitors had two chances to take the lead in the first minute, as Alfred Finnbogason fired wide from the left hand side of the box, before Marten De Roon saw a header saved by Robbin Ruiter.

Utrecht had the lead on 19 minutes through Jens Toornstra who fired a free-kick into the bottom left corner from just outside the box.

Heerenveen had chances to equalise before the break but Kenny Otigba headed wide from a corner, and Finnbogason saw a shot from a tight angle blocked.

Utrecht found their second early in the second half, as a short free kick routine was eventually hit onto the post by Steve de Ridder, but Jacob Mulenga finished from the rebound on 54 minutes.

Mulenga had the chance to seal the win for Utrecht soon after, but fired wide when one on one with the Heerenveen keeper.

Hakim Ziyech tried to get Heerenveen back into the game but missed with several long range efforts, and Utrecht comfortably held on for the win.

The win lifts Utrecht up to 12th, while Heerenveen have now lost three games in a row, and continue their slide down the table and are now 10th.
