Utrecht guaranteed their Eredivisie safety on Sunday with a nervy 2-1 win over 10-man Heracles.

agudelo aThe home side took the lead on 20 minutes with Jacob Mulenga tapping into the net after Cedric van der Gun had his header kept out by Heracles keeper Remko Pasveer.

Utrecht doubled their lead five minutes before the break when Jens Toornstra’s cross to the back post was headed into the bottom corner by Juan Agudelo.

Heracles pulled a goal back on 65 minutes as Jason Davidson’s cross to the back post was perfect for Mikhail Rosheuvel, and the winger nodded into the net.

Mulenga came close to giving Utrecht a 3-1 lead but his sliding effort at the back post was brilliantly stopped on the line by Heracles keeper Pasveer. Any chance for Heracles to get back level diminished on 84 minutes when Bart Schenkeveld was sent off for his second yellow card, and Utrecht held on for the three points.

Utrecht now climb up to 11th in the table, while Heracles sit 14th, and are not 100% guaranteed to be safe, as they sit five points above the bottom three with two games left.
