Both sides were looking to bounce back from defeats in the opening round of the Eredivisie last week, but it was Utrecht that made the brighter start.
The home side should have taken the lead when Yassine Ayoub weaved through three players before setting up Jens Toornstra in space, but goalkeeper David Meul pulled off a great save from the midfielder. Meul then parried an effort from Van der Maarel before Nacer Barazite put the rebound wide.
At the other end Terell Ondaan was causing problems down the left, and Robbin Ruiter had to make a good stop to deny the young winger.
Utrecht took the lead on 64 minutes with Jens Toornstra sending an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner from just inside the box.
Willem II weren’t disheartened from the goal though and they found an equaliser with Robbie Haemhouts finishing into an empty net after Ruiter could only parry a shot.
The away side pushed for the winner, but it was Utrecht who nicked all three points with two minutes to go as Leon de Kogel sliding the ball in at the back post.
It was a heartbreaking end for Willem II, who have now lost two out of two, while Utrecht have their first win of the season.
