The home side took the lead after only 13 minutes, with Cedric van der Gun sliding Steve de Ridders cross into the net.
However Roda JC equalised just before the half hour mark, with Krisztian Nemeth heading brilliantly into the top corner from a cross.
The away side were then awarded a penalty when Guus Hupperts was fouled by Steve Bulthuis, but Robbin Ruiter kept out Nemeth’s poor effort.
On 42 minutes, Utrecht made Roda JC pay for the miss, when Jens Toornstra’s free kick came back off the post, but then hit Roda keeper Kurto on the back of the head, and into the net.
After the hour mark the game was once again level, with Roda JC captain Mark-Jan Fledderus scoring his first goal of the season.
Then on 73 minutes Roda went in front, as Guus Hupperts cross was turned first time into the bottom corner by Nemeth, who made up for his penalty miss.
A brilliant game in Utrecht, which saw both teams deservedly share a point apiece, although the draw keeps both sides in the bottom half of the table.
Five minutes from the end Toornstra equalised for Utrecht with a free kick, before Yoshiaki Takagi was sent off for the hosts for a second bookable offence.
