Gyrano Kerk played a big role as Utrecht came from 2-0 down to defeat ADO Den Haag 4-2.

After their European exit to Zrinjski Mostar in midweek, John van den Brom made one change to his Utrecht side. David Jensen lost his place in goal to Maarten Paes.

The change did not have the desired effect and it appeared Utrecht were on their way to another disappointing result as ADO Den Haag raced to a 2-0 lead within 25 minutes. Aaron Meijers opened the scoring with an excellent free-kick before Erik Falkenburg doubled the lead with a header.

In the 36th minute, Utrecht pulled one back as Gyrano Kerk’s shot cannoned off the crossbar before nestling into the net off the back of Robert Zwinkel’s heel. Van den Brom then decided to make a change with Justin Lonwijk replaced by Issah Abass.

On the stroke of half-time it was 2-2 and it was Kerk again who found the net after beating Zwinkels to the ball and tapping into an empty net.

Shortly after the break, Van den Brom was left furious when Vaclav Cerny, already on a yellow, made a rash challenge. He immediately brought the winger off for Nick Venema.

In the 52nd minute it was 3-2 for Utrecht through an own goal by Lex Immers, who deflected Emil Bergström’s header into his own net. Venema then sealed the victory from close range after an excellent cross by Kerk.

Utrecht start their league campaign with a win while ADO Den Haag will look to bounce back when they travel to PSV Eindhoven next weekend.
