Utrecht have begun the season with a simple 4-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam.

Utrecht have ambitions to challenge the top four and they already had the lead after only two minutes with Adam Maher finding the net with a free-kick.

Utrecht remained in control for the rest of the half and they were close to a second goal through Gyrano Kerk and Adrian Dalmau.

Emanuel Emegha appeared off the bench for Sparta at the break and he proved dangerous, but it was Utrecht who netted again in the 66th minute through Mark van der Maarel.

Substitute Anastasios Douvikas added a third on his debut with a nice placed finish before Simon Gustafson netted a late penalty which was awarded after a handball by Bart Vriends.

A dominant victory for Utrecht who face Groningen next week, while Sparta must improve when they face Heracles Almelo.
