FC Utrecht failed to build on an excellent Nicolas Gavory goal as they were held to a 1-1 draw by VVV Venlo.

Utrecht, who handed 18-year-old Belgian talent Othman Boussaid his first start for the club, looked threatening from the start but efforts from Sander van de Streek and  Simon Gustafson didn’t result in the opening goal.

Eventually, the deadlock was broken in excellent fashion by Nicolas Gavory, who picked up the ball and rifled a strike from distance into the far corner to give Utrecht the lead. It could have been 2-0 before the break, but Gyrano Kerk couldn’t beat Lars Unnerstall after an excellent team move.

Two minutes into the second half, Urby Emanuelson brought down Ralf Seuntjens in the box and Tino-Sven Susic scored from the spot to make it 1-1.

Utrecht pushed to regain the lead but the best chances fell for VVV before the end with Johnatan Opoku wasting two great chances for the visitors, while Seuntjens drew a save from David Jensen late on.

Because of the draw, both teams move onto four points.
