Utrecht wasted the chance to go fift as they were held to a goalless draw by Excelsior.

Dick Advocaat dropped Michiel Kramer to the bench but resisted the opportunity to start home favourite Nick Venema and instead Jean-Christophe Bahebeck led the attack.

Bahebeck got the best chance of a disappointing first half for Utrecht but fired wide. Excelsior also went close through Ali Messaoud, while Marcus Edwards threatened with his dribbling.

Early in the second half, Sander van de Streek struck the post for Utrecht before Advocaat turned to Venema and Kramer. Neither substitute was able to make a difference before the end as Excelsior held on for a point.

The draw means Utrecht stay seventh while Excelsior are 12th.
