Groningen’s relegation moved a step closer on Friday after they lost 2-1 at home against Utrecht.

Groningen were in dire need of a victory against a Utrecht side that had gone four games without a win.

The opening stages saw both sides hit by injuries as Utrecht had to replace Othmane Boussaid, Ramon Hendriks and Taylor Booth, while Jetro Willems went off for the hosts.

There was ten minutes added on and in that time two goals were scored. Firstly, Anastasios Douvikas netted from close range to put Utrecht ahead before Finn Oliver Antman equalised with a deflected effort.

Groningen were hoping to push on in the second half, but the better chances fell to Utrecht. Bart Ramselaar struck the post and also put a shot just wide. In the 76th minute, Bas Dost did make it 2-1 from close range after Mike van der Hoorn headed a free kick into his path.

Utrecht could have add further goals before the end as Groningen succumb to another defeat. Utrecht are seventh, while Groningen stays 17th and seven points from safety.
