Utrecht have sealed a Europa League spot after beating Vitesse 2-0 in Arnhem on Tuesday evening.

The match was finely poised after a 1-1 draw in the first-leg last week but Utrecht dominated the early stages in the GelreDome. Eventually in the 31st minute, it was 1-0 as Cyriel Dessers turned in the box before firing a low strike past a wrong-footed Remko Pasveer.

Vitesse lacked any tempo and looked very tired throughout the match and it was no surprise when fifteen minutes from time, Utrecht doubled their lead. Jean-Christophe Bahebaeck played Simon Gustafson through on goal and the midfielder rounded Pasveer before slotting into the empty net.

A bad evening got worse for the hosts as Mohammed Dauda saw a straight red for a late challenge on Gustafson.

Utrecht comfortably saw out the rest of the match to book their place in the Europa League. It was a fitting end to Dick Advocaat’s time in charge as he now gives way to John van den Brom.
