In an exclusive interview with Football-Oranje, which you can watch by clicking here, Crystal Palace’s Dutch left-back Patrick van Aanholt divulged that Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has his favourites for certain positions.

The 28-year-old is beginning yet another season in the Premier League for Palace. When asked about his lack of selection for the Dutch national team, van Aanholt said, “I think in the last year I was selected every time for the national team; unfortunately I didn’t play.”
The left-back continued, “I’ve just got to impress him in the trainings over there, and over here when I play games. It’s just a matter of time until I get a chance.”
When asked though about whether Koeman has spoken to him about how he can become his first choice, the full-back added, “The manager has got his first choice and I’ve got to accept it. I’ve got to wait for my chance and when I get my chance I’ve got to take it with both hands.”

There is absolutely no surprise here. Van Aanholt might be able to offer pace, but Blind is far more astute defensively and more positionally sound. He’s also better at crossing.
Many are quick to criticize Blind, but for every defensive error he mihht make in a game, PVA would make 3 or 4.
To me PVA should be experimented with as a winger, that’s an area where the Dutch need more depth. Sadly, they have no friendies left to work with now.
