Pelle van Amersfoort netted a great goal as Heerenveen held Vitesse Arnhem to a 1-1 draw.

Vitesse, who beat Sparta Rotterdam in midweek, started the game brightly with Matt Miazga heading over the bar in the sixth minute. Shortly afterwards the home side took the lead with Daniel Høegh diverting Mason Mounts cross into his own net.

Milot Rashica and Mount then missed good chances to make it 2-0 for the hosts who were lucky to not be reduced to ten men on the half-hour mark. Off the ball, Tim Matavz struck Denzel Dumfries with an elbow. Luckily for the striker the referee and his assistants didn’t see the incident and let him stay on the pitch.

On 37 minutes, Pelle van Amersfoort equalised for Heerenveen with a fantastic curling strike. Remko Pasveer came racing out his goal to clear from Henk Veerman but steered the ball to van Amersfoort, who curled it into the empty net.

Veerman missed a good chance to give the visitors the lead early in the second half but it was Vitesse who missed the best opportunity’s to win. Mitchell van Bergen fired just over the bar after a great individual action, before Thomas Bruns hit the post with a strike from distance.

The point means Vitesse remain 7th while Heerenveen are 9th.
