Marco van Basten has apologised after being caught using a Nazi salute live on air.

Prior to Ajax’s clash with Heracles on Saturday evening, Fox Sports reporter Hans Kraay was interviewing Heracles coach Frank Wormuth in German. However, his German left much to be desired.

Van Basten is an analyst for Fox Sports and could be heard saying, “Sieg heil, not so beautiful, pancake.”

Seig heil is a greeting used in Nazi Germany during the second World War.

Van Basten then apologised, “I didn’t mean to shock people, I just wanted to ridicule Hans’ German, but I’m sorry,”

A KNVB spokesperson confirmed to De Telegraaf that they would not be getting involved, “It has been decided not to say anything. What Van Basten said was not on a soccer field.”
