The former Ajax great was an analyst for Fox Sports during Ajax’s slender 2-1 victory over RKC Waalwijk on Saturday evening.
After the game, van Basten took aim at Ajax’s defence and their summer purchases, “I keep saying that Ajax is very vulnerable defensively. It just isn’t right, so many people are free.
“Which is also strange: Ajax has bought Edson Álvarez and Lisandro Martínez for the defence, they are both in midfield. Razvan Marin also bought them, they don’t play at all. So I think the purchasing policy so far is not very successful either.”
Van Basten also took aim at Joel Veltman, “I don’t think he is such a good defender. He stays upright in the centre, but on the side I find him very poor. Playing football, but also tactically I don’t find him impressive.”
I totally agree. Ajax looks very vulnerable; Veltman is no more than a bench player. While I am at it, Ten Hag has ruined Neres. Right now the Brazilian is playing without confidence and may I have lost his place in his national team.
