vanbasteninSince Danny Blind was named as successor to Guus Hiddink last month, Marco van Basten’s name has been put forward for the job as assistant coach, but AZ Alkmaar announced that they would not allow the Dutch legend to do both jobs at once. For that reason the KNVB have had to negotiate for Van Basten’s one-year rolling contract in Alkmaar to be rescinded, with an agreement now reached.

The KNVB will now discuss a three-year-contract with Van Basten on Monday, but it is expected that both parties will swiftly come to an agreement. Van Basten will return to the national team set up seven years after he ended his four year reign as coach of Netherlands. In four years in charge, Van Basten won 35 out of 52 matches, losing only six games.

The former Ajax and AC Milan striker stopped his career as a head coach last year after the stress started causing mental and physical issues. He had spells in charge of Ajax, Netherlands, Heerenveen and finally AZ Alkmaar, who gave him a role as assistant to John van den Brom.
