The former midfielder has taken over from Phillip Cocu, who departed Eindhoven for Fenerbahce after five years in charge.

Van Bommel told the media, “As a player I was already interested in trying new tactical plans and I made many notes. I learnt a lot from the coaches I worked with in my career. How to get along with players and a squad and how to put across your ideas. I also saw things I would never use on the training pitch. I have a clear vision of the way I want my side to play and I will try to put my ideas across as quickly as possible.

“I like to introduce a direct and dominant style of play but in the end football is all about winning games.”

Van Bommel confirmed that his father-in-law Bert van Marwijk will take up an advisory role, “He has won the UEFA Cup and reached the World Cup final, so it would be rather silly not to ask for his advice. One week he will be on the training pitch and another week he will be in the stand to watch the game. He will take up an informal advisory role, providing an experienced sounding board, just the way I wish.”
