After two defeats in their opening two games, Feyenoord must beat Shakhtar if they are to have any chance of continuing in Europe past the winter.
Van Bronckhorst said, “If we do not win at home to Shakhtar Donetsk then it will be very difficult to continue to play European football after the winter break.
”In the event of a draw then we would have the inclination to think that we must go and beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine. In the home game in Rotterdam we must go for the victory.”
The Rotterdam club go into the game without first-choice centre-backs Jan-Arie van der Heijden and Eric Botteghin. Van Bronckhorst also confirmed that Renato Tapia will miss the game, “Renato Tapia willnot play tomorrow due the injury sustained against PEC Zwolle.
”It is possible that Sven van Beek will replace him. He has made a good impression and has fought back well from his own injury. He also came on as a substitute in the Champions League game against Napoli.”
