Giovanni van Bronckhorst was not happy that Ajax’s first goal was allowed during Feyenoord’s 3-0 defeat in the KNVB Cup semi-finals.

Feyenoord had the better of the opening stages in Rotterdam but Sam Larsson hit the post. Just before the break, Matthijs de Ligt opened the scoring from a corner. The corner was awarded despite the ball going out of play through Dusan Tadic and not a Feyenoord defender. Ajax then went on to win 3-0 and book their place in the final.

After the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was angry that VAR did not rule out the Ajax opener, which he saw as crucial.

He said to Fox Sports, “If you do not take the last chance on a trophy, that’s a disappointment: the closer you get to a trophy, the greater the disappointment, I feel that, yes.

“Of course I am disappointed. The moment of Larsson, that we should have had the lead, proves to be decisive: we start well and earn the lead, but that does not happen.

“Both teams were well in the game and just before halftime we get a goal against, but I did see that the ball went out through Tadic, but the referee gave a corner, and it is strange that the VAR also says it’s a corner, while everyone can see that it is not a corner.

“Because of that counter-goal, it was dead in the stadium, and then quickly after you concede that second goal, it will be difficult”
