Vito van Crooy scored the only goal as PEC Zwolle defeated Groningen 1-0 to earn their first win of the campaign.

Groningen had the better chances in a goalless first half with Django Warmerdam twice testing PEC goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart. The away side were also lucky not to be down to ten with Denis Genreau spared a second yellow card.

At the break, Genreau was substituted for PEC Zwolle new boy Gianluca Scamacca and it helped John van ‘t Schip’s side gain some control. In the 64th minute, the lead came for PEC Zwolle with Mike van Duinen capitalising on some poor defending before having a strike saved by Sergio Padt. However, the goalkeeper could do nothing as Vito van Crooy followed up on the rebound to net.

Scamacca nearly made it 2-0 shortly after before Groningen went in search of an equaliser that never came.

PEC Zwolle moves onto four points for the season while Groningen remains on three and are sitting second bottom.
