The 46-year-old had already announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season but after a turbulent week he has rescinded the last few months of his contract.

After the 2-0 defeat to Heerenveen at the weekend, Willem II fans demanded that the coach leave and planned a protest during this weekend’s game with PSV. Van de Looi has now decided to grant the fans their wish.

He said in a statement on the club’s website, “Although the club clearly indicated in a statement that I wanted to continue as head coach, I decided to stop immediately as head coach of Willem II.

“Although we played a safe game last season and this year we are in full control again and we have reached the semifinal of the cup tournament, I regret to note that the sentiment after my announced departure at the end of the season is completely reversed.

“The supporters put too much energy into Erwin van de Looi instead of supporting the team, which certainly does not help the team in the coming decisive phase of the season, which is why I made this difficult and for me very disappointing decision.”

Van de Looi was appointed Willem II coach in 2016 and guided the club to 13th in his first season. They currently sit 15th and five points above the bottom three.
