vd looi preWillem II went into the tie having failed to win their first two Eredivisie ties and they fell behind to Ajax after only 20 seconds. However, goals from Erik Falkenburg and Fran Sol saw the Tilburg side come from behind to record a famous victory.

Afterwards, Erwin van de Looi said to NOS, ”It’s a fantastic achievement and it gives us a great feeling to win against Ajax in Amsterdam for the first time in our history especially after losing our first two games of this season. But the way we came back after conceding the first goal was formidable and we can celebrate a fine victory.

”After conceding the first goal it is quite apparent that we do not defend well from crosses but you must also be aware against Ajax with players like Klaassen & El Ghazi that Ajax put crosses in and are dangerous and we reacted well to going 1-0 down. I must say when I arrived here that if you look at Willem II last year when they conceded first that their heads then dropped and this week in training we spoke about that in terms of not giving up and carry on together and we did that brilliantly.

”A result like this gives us confidence to take into the next game against Roda JC but with the spirit that we have shown tonight we will win games this season. Today Willem II beat Ajax and that it fantastic for everyone connected with the club but it was also important to win our 3rd game of the season to avoid being on 0 points”.
