AZ went into the second leg leading 3-0 on aggregate but lost 3-0 in Utrecht before being defeated in a penalty shootout.

Van den Brom said ”Today cost so much energy with extra time and penalties also the fact where this is the last game of the season where after this game we will say farewell to players and also staff members.

”We tried to battle and match FC Utrecht in a physical sense. We also played 50 minutes with 10 men. We fought well during extra time and were the better team in my opinion.

”I cannot fault my players in any way. We have played 56 games this season and for them to perform in the way they did I can only be proud.

”We played great games during our run through the European play-offs”.
