AZ Alkmaar boss John van den Brom has described Erwin van de Looi’s decision to leave Thomas Ouwejan and Guus Til out of the latest Netherlands U21 squad as “Scandalous”.

Netherlands U21’s will not be at next years European Championships but close out the qualifiers with ties against Latvia and Ukraine this month. Erwin van de Looi named his squad on Friday with AZ duo Guus Til (20) and Thomas Ouwejan (22) two surprise absentee’s.

Van de Looi told Ons Oranje, “We did not qualify, that means you are already looking at the qualification for the next European Championship. That is why we have selected some young guys who can participate. We have supplemented that with older boys with more experience.

‘We look at what we have for young boys per position, which we have preferred. In some positions you have to make difficult choices and drop older boys. Boys who actually did very well for the Dutch Juniors. Guus and Thomas are examples of this. That is very disappointing for them, but it is purely with a view to the future.”

However, AZ boss John van den Brom is not amused by his players exclusion, “It is ridiculous that they are no longer there.

“I completely disagree and I let the coach know about it. That was not a nice conversation, I can tell you. I think it is scandalous. Those guys have always been an example, we get feedback every time. They behave great and always train maximally and then you get the lid on the nose. While Guus was the captain of the Dutch National Team last time out. That is also worth a lot, it now appears. This can not be explained. Guus was also not amused . And rightly so, I think.”
