Excelsior manager Mitchell Van der Gaag spoke to the NOS after the Rotterdam derby with Sparta ended in a 1-1 draw at Woudestein.

Van der Gaag said, ” I believe that a 1-1 draw was a fair result and we can live with that although it’s a shame that we did not manage to pick up all 3 points tonight.

”I believe especially in the first half the tempo was extremely high from both clubs.

”I can understand that the fans are frustrated that we are yet to win at home this season in front of our own fans. But we have won games away from home against strong opponents.

”You can expect a heated Rotterdam derby especially in the situation that Sparta Rotterdam find themselves in. We have been there before and therefore in these types of games it is to be expected.

”We want to stay up without the need of the relegation play-offs. That is our objective this season.”
