Former Excelsior and NAC Breda boss Mitchell van der Gaag has been named as the new head coach of Jong Ajax.

Current Jong Ajax boss Michael Reiziger has been added to the coaching staff of Erik ten Hag for next season, meaning a new coach was needed for the Keuken Kampioen Divisie side.

Ajax have now confirmed the appointment of Mitchell van der Gaag on a two-year-deal.

The 47-year-old told the club’s website, “Working with the greatest talents in the country is a fantastic challenge.

“Ajax is an absolute top club, last year’s performances have only reinforced that. Nobody escaped that here in Portugal. I am really looking forward to getting started, to build a bridge with the players to the first team and to achieve great performances in the Kitchen Champion Division, of course.”

Van der Gaag began his coaching career with Maritimo in Portugal before spells with Belenenses, Ermis and FC Eindhoven before he took charge of Excelsior in 2016.

He gained widespread praise for his two-year spell with Excelsior but he decided to leave Rotterdam last summer for NAC Breda. After only a few months in charge he decided to leave the now relegated Eredivisie side.
