Excelsior twice came from behind and netted the winner late on to defeat Sparta Rotterdam, who remain bottom of the table.

van der Gaag said, ”Some might say that we did not deserve the three points today but this is an important victory for us.

”We showed great resilience today and we remained stable and they are becoming our qualities during matches.

”We have become more mature and in derbies, your have to adjust and bring something different to the game.

”This is the 3rd time that we have beaten Sparta Rotterdam 3-2 and I would not say that it is a coincidence. We are aware of what the Rotterdam derby means to Excelsior Rotterdam fans.

”We are in good form away from home this season. We are by no means already safe from relegation this season. But today is a good step in the right direction.”
