heiThe 27-year-old left Vitesse at the end of the season after his contract expired, and despite holding hopes of moving abroad, the defender has decided to move to Feyenoord on a three-year-deal.

Technical director Martin van Geel told the official Feyenoord website, “Van der Heijden has played at the highest level in the Netherlands for years and, at 27, he is now stronger than ever. He can compete, and his age and experience mean that he can help other players develop.”

Van der Heijden spent four-years with Vitesse after leaving Ajax in 2011, and made 123 Eredivisie appearances for the Arnhem club. He joins as a replacement for Joris Mathijsen and Khalid Boulahrouz, who both left De Kuip this summer.

The centre back will wear the number 6 shirt.
