The former PSG and Ajax right-back signed for the MLS side on Thursday after they agreed a deal with Cagliari to release the 29-year-old.

Van der Wiel said, “My first impressions of Toronto FC are very good. They always want to win and that fits well with me.

“I have learned to try to always get myself playing with players and clubs that strive and have the ambition to be champions. That is why I am here.

Van der Wiel has won 46 caps for the Dutch national team.
