Van der Wiel took to Instagram to confirm his departure, writing, “I just want to win and do everything for it, no matter what the consequences are. I think that mentality was a bit too much for them and they have decided they will not need me this season. Teammates and fans: I’m going to miss you.”

The 30-year-old leaves the MLS side less than a year after joining the club following a dreadful spell in Italy with Cagliari. Previously the former Dutch international spent time with Fenerbaçhe, Paris Saint-Germain, and Ajax – where he came through the Amsterdammer’s academy.

The right-back made a total of 34 appearances for Toronto FC without scoring. During his time in Canada, the club won the Canadian Championship and were runners up in the CONCACAF Champions League.
