Speaking to De Telegraaf, Van Dijk said he hopes that even though Celtic don’t want to let him go, they will allow him to speak to a big English club should they make a bid for him.

Van Dijk said, “It has has gone awfully quickly.”

“I have recently been thinking a lot about my career. I am now 23 and have played at Willem II, FC Groningen and Celtic and am now linked to clubs like Arsenal. Is that not great?

“There are a lot of clubs interested, but from what i hear the asking price of Celtic is enormous. The club is clear: they don’t want to let me go in the winter, because we’re playing for four trophies.

“It’s only happened three times in history that Celtic picked up the treble, so that’s a nice goal.”

“I understand the point of view from the club and I see it as a compliment that they don’t want to let me go. But we have to be realistic. If there’s a nice club from England, we must sit down and talk. I want to develop myself as a player.”
