It was leaked last week that van Dijk was set to pick up the award but it was made official on Sunday as he saw off competition from Raheem Sterling, Eden Hazard and Sadio Mane.
The Netherlands captain has been in sensational form for Liverpool this season and becomes the first Dutchman since Robin van Persie in 2012 to take the trophy home and the fourth overall joining other winners Ruud van Nistelrooy and Dennis Bergkamp.
Van Dijk said on receiving the award, “It’s the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week.
“It’s special. I’m very proud and honoured to receive it.”
Miedema took home the Woman’s award thanks to her goalscoring record that has led Arsenal to the WSL title this season. The 22-year-old has scored 22 goals and added 10 assists in 19 appearances.
The Netherlands international said, “I’m obviously really proud to represent my team here, we’ve had an amazing year, especially with winning the league.
“I’m just really happy I could help my team all season long with scoring goals and it means a lot.”
Hearty congratulations to Virgil van Dijk and Vivienne Miedema.
