Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk believes the Dutch national team will only get better in the coming months and years.

After missing out on two international tournaments in a row, Netherlands are within touching distance of sealing a place at Euro 2020.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Virgil van Dijk said on his Oranje teammates, “All players are hungry, Frenkie and Matthijs are just at Barcelona and Juventus, Stefan de Vrij is doing very well at Inter. I think we have a top group that will only get better. ”

Looking back at missing out on Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup, van Dijk said, “Yes, if you look back like that, a lot has changed. In everything: in atmosphere, approach and of course also football and results. We had a really difficult period, yes, so did I. In fact: it was a terrible time. ”

Van Dijk is 28 but can see himself as part of this Netherlands side for years to come, “As a central defender, I can go on for a few more years. I am 29 during the European Championship, then 31 during the World Cup, 33 at the next European Championship and maybe I will continue until the World Cup in 2026, then I am 35. “
