Virgil van Dijk netted twice as Premier League leaders Liverpool routed Watford 5-0 at Anfield.

After their 0-0 draw with Manchester United at the weekend, Liverpool were under pressure to return to winning ways against Watford as they looked to keep ahead of Manchester City.

There was to be no problems at Anfield with Sadio Mane netting a double in the opening 20 minutes. Divock Origi then made it 3-0 in the second half before Virgil van Dijk netted two headers in the space of four minutes to complete the rout.

Liverpool remains one point ahead of Manchester City, who defeated West Ham 1-0. Philippe Sandler was named on the bench but did not make his Premier League debut.

Tahith Chong was also left disappointed as he didn’t make his league debut for Manchester United in their 3-1 win at Crystal Palace, who had Patrick van Aanholt in their line-up and Jairo Riedewald on the bench.

Nathan Ake’s Bournemouth went down 5-1 at Arsenal, while Ryan Babel’s Fulham remain in big trouble after a 2-0 loss to Southampton. Vincent Janssen was not part of the squad as Tottenham lost 2-0 at Chelsea.
