Virgil van Dijk scored both goals as ten-man Liverpool defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1.

With Manchester City dropping points at Newcastle United earlier on Saturday, Liverpool knew a win against Brighton would strengthen their position at the top.

After 18 minutes, Van Dijk opened the scoring with a powerful header and the Netherlands captain made it 2-0 shortly afterwards in similar circumstances.

Liverpool had to hang on in the second half after goalkeeper Alisson Becker was sent off and Lewis Dunk pulled one goal back for the visitors.

Georginio Wijnaldum also played the full ninety minutes for Liverpool, while Davy Propper was in the Brighton side.

Liverpool are now 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
