memphis man uttThe 21-year-old signed for Manchester United with a height of expectation after guiding PSV to the Eredivisie title last season, but Memphis hasn’t been able to replicate that form.

Since the 3-0 loss to Arsenal at the start of October, when Memphis was hooked at half time, the winger hasn’t started in the Premier League, and was heavily criticised by Netherlands boss Danny Blind for his attitude recently.

During his press conference on Friday, United boss Louis van Gaal was asked whether he had expected more from Memphis this season, he said: “Of course, because otherwise he was still in the team. Otherwise I don’t look for another solution and I look for another solution in my team and I have kept Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira for example for that option and now he has to fight back and he does it, so I am satisfied.”

However Van Gaal went on to praise Memphis, who has taken on his challenge to win his place back in the first eleven.

He added, “(Memphis is) always looking good in training,”

“Sometimes they are out of the selection because their competitor is in that moment in a better shape but that doesn’t mean that I have a quarrel with the player.”
