The Netherlands captain was heavily criticised in the English press after only touching the ball 13 times during last weeks win over Arsenal, and there were even calls for the striker to be dropped after a poor start to the season.
However Van Persie answered his critics in the perfect way, setting up Wayne Rooney to score before sealing the 3-0 win over Hull with a powerful strike into the top corner from outside the box.
After the match, Van Gaal stated that he believes the 31-year-old can still do better, “Every striker needs a goal. When you don’t score for the last two or three matches, you need a goal,”
“So I’m very pleased and happy for him that he scored his goal but I’m sure that he can play better than today.”
Van Persie has now netted four goals in twelve games so far this season.
