After the game, Van Gaal apologised for his actions and in his press conference on Tuesday the 68-year-old admitted he needs to control his emotions.

He said, “I have to control my emotion, which is what I am saying always to my players.

“But I don’t feel sorry for it, because it’s me, and maybe at that time I was right.

“I’m not a clown, I am Louis van Gaal, a human being, a professional manager.”
