Netherlands were ten minutes away from sealing their World Cup spot against Montenegro on Saturday before surrendering a 2-0 lead. The 2-2 draw means Netherlands must now get at least a point on Tuesday at home to Norway to seal a place in the World Cup.
Speaking at his pre-game press conference, Van Gaal said he only showed his players the last ten minutes of the game against Montenegro, “I think we played poorly the whole game against Montenegro, but I only showed the last ten minutes. That already caused a shock. It was a soft evaluation. The whole game was too much.”
Van Gaal wants to see his side defend better but also go for the win against Norway, “We have to play compact against Norway collectively. But you can’t play on a draw, you have to go for the win.”
The Oranje boss thinks Norway will turn up at the game happy that they still have a chance to top the group, “I think Norway should be very happy that they can still participate. They come to the Netherlands very positively, because they no longer expected that. We have to process a big disappointment in two days to grow positively towards the match again.”
Van Gaal is confident his side will seal a World Cup spot, I think we have more quality than Norway and will also show that quality. I base that on today’s training and how everyone has started to think positively again.”
Wishing gaffer LVG, his men in Orange, and their fans good times on and off the field.
