The Aussies are still looking for a new manager after Ange Postecoglou resigned in November and both Van Marwijk and Van Gaal are reportedly among a number of big name coaches on the shortlist.
Luiz Felipe Scolari, Marcelo Bielsa, Jürgen Klinsmann and Van Marwijk have all applied to the Australian FA, who are looking for a coach to lead the nation into the World Cup and then leave after the tournament.
The short-term nature of the job may suit Van Gaal, who wouldn’t be interested in a long-term project but might jump at the chance to coach at another World Cup.
Van Marwijk has been out of a job since leaving his post with the Saudi Arabian national team after a disagreement with their FA.
