Van Gaal spent two years in charge of Manchester United but was axed just days after winning the FA Cup in 2016 in favour of Jose Mourinho.

The 66-year-old has always insisted he is retired since then but has told De Telegraaf that he would make an exception for the chance to defeat Manchester United with a big Premier League side.

He said, “I will probably not manage a club anymore.

“I would make one exception – if a big English club comes for me, then I would do it. Because then I can get the chance to get one over on Manchester United.”
