Chelsea has confirmed that Marco van Ginkel has undergone knee surgery and will be out of action for at least eight months.

The midfielder missed the end of last season due to knee issues, but had the option of playing through it with injections. However, van Ginkel decided to go under the knife once again.

Chelsea confirmed on their website that the surgery had been successful but added that the recovery time will be at least eight months. This is another blow for the Dutch international, who has been plagued by injury since switching Vitesse for Chelsea back in 2013.

Van Ginkel captained PSV to the Eredivisie title last season and had been heavily linked with a permanent move back to Eindhoven or a move to Fenerbahce. However, the 25-year-old can now forget about a transfer until next year.
