Van Ginkel was getting a chance to impress boss Jose Mourinho, as he started the tie against League one side Swindon Town, but lasted only nine minutes.
The injury occured when the midfielder landed awkwardly on his right knee, with Van Ginkel going down in a heap of pain, before being replaced by Ramires.
Chelsea will now await the results of a medical examination, which will be performed tomorrow with assistant coach Steve Holland stating that the injury did not look good.
Since joining Chelsea from Vitesse in the summer, Van Ginkel had only started one game before tonight, the 2-1 defeat to Basle in the Champions League.
The news of the injury will also be awaited by Dutch national team coach Louis van Gaal, who will shortly name his squad for next months World Cup qualifiers.
Hope he recovers well. This is a direct result of him not getting playing time and feeling the pressure when given the chance. Injuries happen. Its too bad as if he was given the chance to go to Ajax he would be playing and mistakes would be allowed and he would develop further. Now his career has gone for the worse. Thank You Vitesse.
