The Dutch midfielder was starting only his second game since joining Chelsea from Vitesse in the summer, but lasted only 9 minutes before falling awkwardly on his leg.
Further scans have shown that he tore his ACL, and after undergoing surgery on Thursday, Van Ginkel will be out for at least six months, making it unlikely for him to play again this season.
Van Ginkel told Sport-Promotion, “I did not hear anything snap in my knee, but I felt right away that it was wrong. This really sucks.”
The 20 year old went on to praise Chelsea’s medical staff, “The medical supervision deserves a big compliment for the way i was assisted over recent days. I am also confident that my rehabilitation, which will take place in London will go well,”
Sadly for Van Ginkel, with no more action likely this season, a place in Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands squad for the World Cup next summer looks almost impossible.
Really feel bad for Marco. But making the move to Chelsea was his major mistake. He would have hardly played anyways and now he has a knee problem that may linger the rest of his career. Its tragic. Look at Afellay. He’s not recovered. Narsingh is still having problems. Knee problems can be an ongoing battle.
