The 20 year old signed a five year deal with the English Premier League side this summer, but Ajax were the player’s first choice according to the players agent. He also stated that the Eredivisie champions were willing to offer around the €9 million that Chelsea signed the player for.
Rob Jansen told BNR, “In terms of Dutch football and the new structure of Ajax, they went to a great deal of money. The player just wanted to join Ajax, not even to another club.”
“The amount Vitesse would have received from Ajax, was not far from what Chelsea offered, but because Chelsea has a tremendous grip on Vitesse, pressure is performed on the player. They wanted him.”
Despite having a number of competitor’s for his position at Chelsea, Van Ginkel has impressed during pre-season, and should be able to count on a number of appearances in Jose Mourinho’s side this year.
A place in the Dutch squad for next summer’s World Cup is a priority for the player, and he received his 2nd cap for his country against Portugal this week.
