van ginkel fAfter moving from Vitesse to Chelsea in the summer, Van Ginkel had so far made only two substitute appearances in the Premier league, and was left out of the squad for the last two matches.

However today the Dutchman was named in the starting eleven for Chelsea’s first Champions League group game against Swiss Champions Basel.

Starting in a midfield that also featured Frank Lampard, and Brazilian Oscar, Van Ginkel was made to play in a deeper role, as he anchored the midfield.

The match was going to plan for Chelsea, when Oscar gave them the lead, but two late goals gave Basel a shock 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.

Van Ginkel was substituted for Demba Ba after 79 minutes, in what was a decent display by the 20 year old, marred by being shown a yellow card in the first half.

Full stats for Van Ginkel on his Champions League debut: 54 passes attempted, 96% pass accuracy, 4 ball recoveries, 2 interceptions and 3 fouls.
