The 65-year-old guided Saudi Arabia to this year’s World Cup but quit in September after a row with their FA.
Van Marwijk will be going to Russia though after being named as the new Australia head coach on Thursday. He replaces Ange Postecoglou, who surprisingly left the position after sealing their place in Russia.
Mark van Bommel, Taco van den Velde and Roel Coumans have joined Van Marwijk’s backroom staff.
Australia will face France, Denmark and Peru at the World Cup.
