In the run-up to the Netherlands World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria on the 25th of March and friendly match with Italy, one of the big questions will be who should start up front for Danny Blind.

Vincent Janssen has been Blind’s first choice but he is only a benchwarmer at Tottenham this season, while Bas Dost is scoring for fun in Portugal. However, asked by Voetbal International, former Netherlands boss Bert van Marwijk has stated a fit Robin van Persie is always his first choice.

He said, “I do not know the reason behind Van Persie’s absence, but a fit Van Persie for me would normally always be first choice.”

The Fenerbahce striker has not played for Netherlands since the Euro qualifying defeat to Czech Republic in October 2015 and was once again left out of the provisional squad named last week.

With van Persie absent, van Marwijk believes Quincy Promes should be preferred to both Janssen and Dost, “But because he’s not there, I would choose speed against Bulgaria. Therefore, I would play from the right with Arjen Robben, Memphis Depay from the left and Quincy Promes into the middle,”
