Van Marwijk guided Saudi Arabia to the World Cup but resigned in September after a disagreement with the nation’s FA. Edgardo Bauza was appointed as his replacement but after three defeats in five friendlies, he has been sacked.

An approach was made to Van Marwijk on Wednesday evening to return as coach but the Dutchman then demanded that a number of staff members who were previously sent away would return again. This immediately became a stumbling point.

Speaking to Voetbal International, Van Marwijk said, “We did not agree two months ago because we could not meet a number of requirements regarding the composition of staff. I have been approached tonight and have filed the same requirements. The union does not want to meet that again. Then it is simple for me.

“I only want to start this assignment if I think we can achieve success at the World Cup. It does not make sense in this way. “
