van marwijk bThe former Dutch national coach was named as struggling Hamburg’s new coach last week, after Thorsten Fink was sacked with the side sitting in the bottom three.

Van Marwijk was only in the stands during the week, as Hamburg scraped through in the German cup, seeing off second division leaders Greuther Furth 1-0 in a nervy tie.

After two heavy league defeats, a trip to Frankfurt was expected to be a tough tie for Van Marwijk’s side, and it proved that way when Hamburg fell behind on 31 minutes.

However in first half stoppage time, Pierre-Michel Lasogga netted the equaliser, and send the teams into the break level.

Frankfurt retook the lead early in the second half, and looked as if they were going to hold onto the three points, but four minutes before the end Marcell Jansen equalised for Hamburg.

It will go down as a decent point for Bert van Marwijk’s side, but they are still searching for wins to take them away from the bottom three, with another away trip to Nurnberg up next.
